Anyone who has followed my work knows that I love shooting the skaters at the Venice Beach skate park. It started off simply as a technical challenge… to hone my ability to capture sharp, well composed images of rapid movement in multiple planes and directions simultaneously. On my most recent trip to California, my interest turned more toward mood than technique. I was curious about the skater’s ultra-chill, moment-to-moment flow as juxtaposed effortlessly with their eXtreme intensity, grit and drive to master their skills. And I was fascinated by how their intense edges were amplified by the harsh sun lying low in the afternoon sky, and how their softer flow blossomed against the backdrop of gold and pastel sunsets over the ocean. This series of images attempts to highlight the contrasts, intensity and beauty of skating at sea.
